One amp. Stick around for the "cliche clean tones" at the end. A good 100wt Plexi style....because it's a gorgeous clean amp to do Chic covers with a strat , also what Metallica uses to RECORD....and everywhere in between. Most decent 80s heavy records that people attribute to JCM800s were NOT....that's what people GIGGED with....they recorded the album with hot rodded Plexis more often than not--or Plexi's with a boost pedal in front....anyhoo.... One amp? I mean Suhr makes a nice one, too, that's got a bunch of channel switching and stuff that can be helpful if it's one amp that is also going to take "any gig"--it's not necessary for all gigs, and for like NO studio gigs....but, should be pointed out, there's is much more a touring workshorse. George's seems to nail "that" a little more, but Suhr's could tour with even a cover band where you need to cover a million tones at your feet....

I could no sooner live with one amp than have one food for the rest of my life. Just would never work for me.

ahh, but the question is if you had to, which amp would be The One?

ahh, but the question is if you had to, which amp would be The One? Remember the Seymour Duncan 'Convertible'? Two channels, switchable preamp modules. My favorites included the 'Melting Marshall' and the 'Vox 86'

Only (?) 3 amps for the studio (in no particular order):
1. Mesa Boogie Royal Atlantic or Mark V
2. 68 Marshall Plexi
3. Emery Sound Microbaby
Of course we all would want more and the list could go on and on but the 3 above would provide me lots of different sounds.

geoff, I had the THD Bi-Valve for years, both the 15 and 30 watt models. I had THD's 2 X 12" cabinet and a Matchless 1 X 12" cabinet. On paper it seems brilliant, changing tubes was easy, but i really sounded much too nasal, and nothing could get rid of it. I will say it does impart its own thing. El34s are more Brit sounding than a 6l6, for example, but neither sounds like a clone of a Marshall or Fender regardless of the cab used, imo. Just goes to show the circuit is probably more important than whatever tube is used. I think I like how it's voiced more than Martin did because I still have mine. Cheers, Geoff

Yesterday I was at a high-end music store in Virginia with some friends, checking out a Mesa Mark V head, and this seems to be a perfect "one amp." It has so many modes and channels, power scaling, etc, it can do pretty much anything. Very impressive.
But the weirdest thing happened, I came out of the tiny loud amp room for some air and Don Was, Alison Kraus and Warren Haynes came in from the back with their entourage. I was dumbfounded and starstruck at the same time. Apparently Don Was doesn't care much for wearing shoes. I had just drank a pint of black coffee so I thought it would be best to not bother them. Warren did say hi to me though so I asked him about his Christmas special show in Asheville, feel like I should go check that out now. He was asking about the vintage Marshalls in the loud room but the sales guy said, "sorry there's someone in there pounding through a Mesa right now."
I cannot emphasize enough how overwhelming the combo of coffee, loud mesa amps, salesman, tight shop, and superstars was in my scattered brain. Life is strange, and you can't make this stuff up.

My top 3 here are my 1966 Deluxe reverb (heavily modified to 80 watts and tube loops) my pair of 1965 Showman heads and my Basson Sound stack and combo.
I'm partial to the Basson as I designed it. It's done the way I like an amp to be done.

Me too. I shot him a message on FB to see if there was one around Nashville I could play....his recreation/clones of the vintage plexis I HAVE played--literally next to his real ones....spot....fucking....on....but, ALSO not that interested because a 100wt NMV Plexi is a loud clean amp functionally--no one has the kind of gig where opening one up to get it to crunch would be appropriate. So, I passed on buying his recreations....but, I don't think I've ever seen him demo this that the MV wasn't on 3 or something. I'm sure that still equates to "pretty damn loud"....but, I'm Ok with that---as long as I can get the full range of Plexi tone at small gig volume, I'm good.
I'm really kind of just getting to this place where I realize that I have two "brit drive" amps....and I would like to make it one. The key is that an old Plexi is equally friendly to single coils as humbuckers. Most drive amps are not. Why I ended up having the little el84 amp built locally--since I play mostly single coil....

FWIW....he didn't get back to me on FB. George looks to be about my age.....maybe he thinks FB is about as useful as I do....still--hire someone to at least answer customers' questions like "is there someone carrying it in Nashville".....ya know....? The answer is "probably not"....when the F is the Nashville amp show when you need it?

Warren is such a nice guy - I engineered his last solo album. I can say - all electric rhythm guitars went into a splitter, then out to a Super Reverb, a Carr Mercury, and a Gibson Falcon with reverb off but Trem on. All lead parts were tracked with a custom one off amp built by Peter McMahon, who previously worked for Diaz. He builds amps under the Homestead name now. www.homesteadamps.com/about/ There wasnt a single Marshal to be seen. On load in, he had a ton of small watt very old Gibsons that he seemed to adore.

Apparently Carter Vintage is a "dealer"....but, they have none on hand. So....tell him to get them one. With the cab with the Alnico Creambacks....two birds, one stone--I called around and couldn't find those in stock anywhere here either.

I spoke with George and they are calling Carter Vintage regarding a demo. He said they have a purple cab there with alnico creams in stock. Not sure if it was a 2x12 or a 4x12.

Cool. Is that you playing on his new YouTube vid? No, I have some clips, but just don't have time to post right now. I just want to say that if you like good vintage Marshall amps, from Plexi to JTM tone, to even a nice Brown sound. This amp can do it all! It was exactly what I have been looking for to fill that void in my amp room. I have heard a ton of Marshall's over the years, and even George's prized collection of nice authentic plexi's. I have to say that this is the REAL deal, and much more versatile and a perfect compliment to any studio for those nice Marshall tones. George is am amazing amp builder and this amp is worth every penny. I also don't want to leave out that George is a very nice guy and loves gear to the fullest. I can't wait to get back there and hang out. We have some cream backs on order for one of my 4x12 cabs. We will be shooting out cabs and speakers next! Can't wait!

I need to hear more Les Pauls, SGs, Explorers into his amps!! Single coils just don't do when it comes to the Marshall type of sound. Well, not for me, anyhow.

Well, that's 90% of all his clips, LPs that is (thus his commentary "we've gotten requests for strat clips")....which I have no interest in, thus don't post. If you JUST want the humbucker balls out, "Marshall cliche" (humbucker heavy gain) a million amps will do that--including plenty first party Marshalls. It takes a plexi/related circuit to do that AND handle singles well. That IS the magic of it, IMO/E.
Which to tie back to the OP.....was why I posted it. LOTS of driven amps sound great for humbuckers and not singles....it's hard to match a Fender guitar and amp and NOT get a good clean sound....but, if you're looking for multipurpose, a Plexi can deliver Metallica, Allmans, Clapton, Police, Chic....and lots of space in between. None of the other "vintage" amp designs could do that.
