I can't see a need to ever use that much gain, but knowing it can do it makes me want a metroplex ever more!! Just trying to help! Actually, I don't think the gain was even maxed out.

Here's actually some of George's own classic rock noodling....I imagine that EB has a big boost in it like the Luke3 does--doesn't that hit the front 20db hotter or something absurd? That clip does have a little....um....mid scoop sound.

Nobody ever mentions these but they are probably the best rock / metal guitar amps I've ever heard.. Soo at number 1 it's!..!
1) Rhodes Colossus.
Then followed by:
2) Peavey 5150 3) Engl Savage
Special mention:
Diezel VH4

Well, hey, you mentioned them! I wouldn't, as I don't like any of them... but I'm very glad you do and that we all have different tastes. That means there's a greater probability that more brands will survive!

That means there's a greater probability that more brands will survive! Well you must dislike a massive amount of rock and metal tones then as the Peavey 5150 was used rampantly in those genre's over the years. I've never actually met anyone else that's owned a Rhodes Colossus, surprised you couldn't get something decent sounding out of one. It's very versatile.. Engl is an aquired taste must admit. Of course like everything in music, it's all subjective. There's no wrong or right..!

@shadowamd, well you might be right about a lot of use of the Peavey 5150. I never really bonded with that amp. I found it to be too overblown, over done, over baked, over cooked, too polished yet rough on the seemingly smooth edges. But that's just MY IMPRESSION! I had much better success with Marshalls like 2203s, 2204s, JVMs etc But like I said, we can all use different things and get results!

Just one of those amps where you gotta know what to do with it and it can take a while (lower end MB compression / specific settings on the amp / EQ etc.), Andy Sneap AFAIK was big on it. I've used them enough to know how to get ridiculously smooth heavy chugs and with the right guitar tons of decent sustain.. A lot of people love Messa's for rock / metal and I do like the sound of them in the right hands, I personally can't get some models of Messa's to sing for me.. I do like the JVM's must admit, used much in the way of Laney? If you like that older type of distortion they do record very well.. Nice amps!..

ahh, but the question is if you had to, which amp would be The One? Remember the Seymour Duncan 'Convertible'? Two channels, switchable preamp modules. My favorites included the 'Melting Marshall' and the 'Vox 86' Oh yeah. And the can of De-Oxit you have to keep on hand to clean the plug-in contacts constantly. Most intermittent amp I've ever encountered.

1 amp, that's a tough one.
Around here I have a '64 Super Reverb, '68 Bassman that's been converted to the earlier Marshall type circuit and loaded with EL34's, '70's Champ, Ampeg V4B converted to EL34's, and a half dozen-ish various low watt Alamo, Gibson, Harmony, Silvertone, etc.

Had a great chat with Mr. Duncan himself, about the Convertible, at NAMM. The demand for them is through the roof in the UK. I've encouraged him to reissue them. 30 years later, there's been a lot of developments done that can improve on his groundbreaking work! He was 30 years ahead of his time, after all.

I've got a G12T-75 4x12 cabinet here, but I do have a 2x12 with some 30 watt speakers. .. I'll try them both.

Had the presence rolled off and treble on 3 with the mid and bass up there, and it was still cutting my head off. In all settings and switch configurations. It sounded very different to the demos I have heard.

I'd like to know if you could only have ONE amp, what would it be? My #1 for a while has been a 1973 50 watt Marshall modified for gain and channel switching by Martin Golub at LA Sound Design. I send it straight into a Two Notes Studio load box and then PT. No fuss, no muss. Sounds glorious. For clean I use a new-ish Deluxe Reverb head, also into the Two Notes. It's a beautiful signal path, and 100% consistent from session to session. The Two Notes is amazing and IMO leagues above other load boxes I've tried - the mic and cabinet IRs are spot-on. It's hard to choose one cabinet/mic setup over another, they all sound so authentic.

Well, I still stand by my 3 amps to rule them all... and congrats to matt for also getting a mid 70s Marshall 50 watt. Beast of an amp!! All the being said, I'm on my way to Texas and picking up my SECOND 1986 Seymour Duncan Convertible 100watt. Dayumm, I love these amps! I have the head already, this one's a 1x12 combo. It is a killer amp and can do almost anything. I'm hoping to swap it for an Upton or Shannon 251 eventually. hint hint Johnkenn @sinsay

I am a bit of an amp fetishist and own a number of Marshalls and clones, many of them modded by Dave Friedman. I also can call on a Friedman BE-100, Soldano SLO100, Cameron CCV, or Randall RM if the need for gain gets overwhelming. The SLO and CCV don't get used much these days though. I ran out of Aquanet a long time ago.

An embarrassment of riches then? I ran out of Aquanet a long time ago. Oh, I gotcha covered! There are some great new brands on the market these days. The art of teasing is not dead!! It's just more ozone-layer-friendly.

Hoping it's still in town....
