Are you guys committing to the sound at the time of recording? I commit to something during tracking, but I always take a DI of the instrument alone and a DI of the instrument and the effects as well. I've been burned too many times by musicians changing their minds about stuff we've done well after we've moved on.. With a DI of the instrument and another with the effects I can blend together a new reamping through the AXE really quickly. Even if we committed to a good tone during tracking, sometimes going back and making the tweaks on the amp still works better than doing a bunch of EQ and such in the DAW. The AXE makes it painless to do this. One thing I've been doing is going through all my favorite presets and turning up the highpass filter on the cab. I've been finding that there is much more rumble from the AXE than there is from a real cab. This has really tightened up some of the presets a lot. What’s your signal splitting setup for the unbalanced instrument/effects lines?

There's also the option to use another output, say #2, and pick off the input after the first block -or maybe after the second if you added a comp for example- and send the signal directly to the secondary output. You could even send both the processed and DI signal out via USB and stay digital. I'm going to try this compared with a Radial JDI. I bet the results will be: virtually no difference.

Yes, I'm using that too, but I thought Ragan was asking about external.

I'm going to try the SPDIF output tonight. The AF3 is fixed at 48K clock but that's what I record at, so no problem there.

I just started using the SPDIF out on the AXE III to free up a couple analog inputs for my OX amp since I record everything at 48k and the SPDIF works great for the AXE and sounds great.

Do you have to buy this direct from Axe FX? No dealers?

Their first production run is missing the headphone jack and associated circuitry. They are offering a $50.00 discount for those units. The next run is in April. If your not on the list it will be a few months after that.

Esp if I had the 3 already. But I can't even get on the waiting list as I'm not in the US. Im guessing the waiting list for the FM3 is a bit smaller now. The NeuralDSP announcement will be pretty big with all the kids in the rock and metal crowd.

getting ready to pull effects from my old guitar rig to wire up to the new console and thought I'd remind everyone how much easier life is with the axeIII - so much easier to move Attachments:

getting ready to pull effects from my old guitar rig Now that's impressive! And increasingly due to the AF3 and other current guitar gear, from another era.

Newbie question. I'm trying to get a DI output analog. I've patched a "cable"from input 1 to output 2 parallel to the chain going to output 1. I'm using the axe-edit software. The editor shows a connection, but I'm not getting any output metering on the AXEFX or into my DAW. Why?
Also, how do you get block metering to show up in the editor?

Figured it out, there's an analog volume knob for the outputs on the front panel that was off. I had the Axe-FX at the bottom of a rack and was using the editor for all functions.
Still don't know how to do the block metering from the editor.

I just read your first question.. which is funny because I also couldn't figure out why I was seeing the meter working but no output on my DI.. lol. I'm not sure what you mean by block metering in the editor.. Unfortunately I threw my back out last night and I'm pretty much stuck in bed or I'd go look at my unit.

I still don't know what I'm doing, but supposedly there's a way to see gain metering on all the blocks and outputs. It's a pet peeve of mine that some gear doesn't have at least signal present metering for ins and outs.

Can you look at the In or Out block for metering? That what you talking about? There’s also a big eq graph somewhere in the amp block I think.

I was going to go in and see if I could find metering...then I got sucked in to just playing for two hours and completely forgot.

What’s the deal with used pricing on the Axe FX III? Can’t hardly find anyone selling them for under 18 or 1900, and by the time you factor in shipping and tax, it’s close to the current new price, if not over. Warranties don’t transfer to second owners, so that’s something to consider as well.
