Next up is a slightly tweaked setup, which I made after getting my head wrapped around what I was hearing (esp WRT the proximity effect of the MG33s). In this case, I was actually trying to get a cool drum sound, not just do a bunch of a/b-ing, so I raised the OHs a bit, backed the tom mics off a little, made some adjustments to the exact snare mic placements, and left all the processing in place. No flat captures of this bit. I should also note this is a different snare. I started to get curious about the SPL handling of the MG33s, so I grabbed one of my extra loud snares - a Gretsch hand hammered COB that just screams. View AttachmentBenny you’re really trying to spend my money! If you get a chance would love to hear them as a stereo pair, and since you do spend time T Bearkley would love to hear them on strings if the opportunity presents itself! Oh boy! Strings, you say! I am actually officially on winter break as of yesterday (woohoo!) so no Berklee for me for like a month. But my second engineer is a violinist so when she's back in the US I'll bug her about bringing her fiddle by to do a track for ya.

Am I remembering markfouxman had posted a discount code somewhere, or mentioned emailing for a discount? I have a pair of AL95s and am curious about adding these as well. AL95s are outstanding.

bgrotto hanks for posting that stuff. If you post some more, if you wouldn’t mind hosting it somewhere like Dropbox and posting links, it would be much appreciated. Storage is one of the biggest costs of running the site, and we’re not breaking any donation records here lol. (Thanks for your contribution stratboy)

I'm going to try to stitch together a YouTube video soon with all this stuff, so the dickheads at google can host the stuff. Once I do, I'll delete my posts. Is that cool? Or does it need to get done sooner?

Just a quick update on my video: I'm nearly done, just had a busy (er, hellish) mix week so I sorta got sidelined. I think I'll get it finished over the xmas holiday and will share here when it's done, and relieve @johnkenn of hosting all that audio (sorry again, John!!!!)

Thanks for sharing your test Benny.
What was the distance you ended up with on the toms?

Thanks for sharing your test Benny. What was the distance you ended up with on the toms? My pleasure! Only pulled the mics back maybe an inch or two (at most) from what is pictured. So probably 3-4ish inches. I also found a wide variety in tones based on the angle, btw. Eager for a proper session with these. I’ve got a band coming in for a full length starting next tues, so I’ll be able to really dig in then. It sucks doing double duty as engineer and drummer haha! It’ll be good to just be totally focused on the recording side, and accommodating the players particular style. I reckon it will provide considerably more insight into these mics.

Did a bass session today with the MG33 alongside my usual bass cab dynamic mic, the EV PL10. Holy cow was it awesome!

Tracked some piano today and tried the MG33s out against a few of my regulars. Here's some audio:

Hi Benny, you've put in a lot of work with these 2 vids so thank you heaps; they are to my ears very cool and worthy mics. They would be great on piano in a busy mix as they seem quite open without too much upper bass emphasis but still enough to not sound skinny. Nice stuff , Cheers, Ross

Not surprised - Mark Fouxman is a concert pianist with an incredible ear!
Also, the DPA 4011 is more than 5X the price of the Samar.

Thanks for that. I record piano often and was thinking a pair of the mg33 would be interesting. Picked up a mg20 when it came out and was considering a 2nd but may just pick up a pair of the 33's.

I may have missed it, but am super curious to dial in to what the impact of the MG20 transformer is to the overall sound in such a comparison. I have a MG20 and really dig it. I'd be keen to see how the MG32/33 compare.

I've got a pair of MG20s on order from Samar, and would definitely love to do some a/b-ing of the mics, so when they finally arrive I'll throw them up against the 33s (and probably some other contenders too)

Yes, the price of the MG33s is practically a weakness; they're so affordable it makes them seem "cheap". LOL. I think they easily hold their own against the much more expensive DPAs (and the RN17s), and consider the price point to be something of a unicorn.

Tracked some piano today and tried the MG33s out against a few of my regulars. Here's some audio: The mg33 has such a great voicing. It seems very easy to mix, like the mids speak correctly. I feel like the Soyuz aren’t as good in that respect. Totally different sound, but for the price these are amazing.
