Great description, I really liked the MG33 in this clip for those very reasons. BTW- Does anyone know where there is a comparison/shootout between the MG32/33 and the MG20? I may have missed it, but am super curious to dial in to what the impact of the MG20 transformer is to the overall sound in such a comparison. I have a MG20 and really dig it. I'd be keen to see how the MG32/33 compare. I've got a pair of MG20s on order from Samar, and would definitely love to do some a/b-ing of the mics, so when they finally arrive I'll throw them up against the 33s (and probably some other contenders too)
Have you had a chance to hear the MG20s yet? Loved your video on the MG33s

Still waiting on them. Guess they're kinda backordered or something. ericn - I think it was you asking about string recording samples? Welp, had a string session today, used the 33s on all the spot mics of the quartet, plus a Samar V37 something or other stereo ribbon for the ensemble pickup. I can't share the files here, unfortunately, but things sounded good!

Just ordered a pair of 32’s. Hoping to replace my mc930’s which haven’t really had a lot of use around here in recent years.

Finally got a chance to play around with this M32 a little more. So, it's definitely less scooped than my Soyuz 013 FET. I always judge a mic/capsule by what happens when you EQ it...For instance, something cheaper (I won't say names, but if you guessed you would be warm) kind of falls apart when you start digging out bottom end. Some mics seem to cleverly cover up the strident upper mids and you don't hear them until you start cutting frequencies. Or you just can't get the boominess out without leaving harshness. Then you go down the rabbit hole of taking out the boom, then cutting the harshness and on and on... Well, this mics ain't that. Just beautiful mids. Also - when a capsule is really well done, it seems like the slightest changes can really shape a tone. Just from memory of the 84s I've owned, the 32 seems like it might be a little shinier on top. But where this thing shines is the "middle mids." The 400hz to 2kHz just seems to really capture so well. If you have to dig bottom out, you're not left with this painful 3-8kHz. (Try that with a Blue Spark) I was also impressed by its off axis response...the pattern seems pretty huge. In fact, I sang this vocal bending over to sing into the acoustic setup from probably 3-4 feet away. So this is just a quick recording to give you an idea. I pulled out about -3db at 590Hz, but it's flat everywhere else. Have a little Valhalla Room on it to make it not dead mono. Like I said, I just sand into the mic as it was positioned for the vocal. One pass, no tuning so don't make fun of the effort. I EQ'd the vocal - dug out some bottom and mids. Let me know if there are any quick things you want me to try with it. I might take it to a session on the 7th and have some real players play on it... Here's the wav file - drive.google.com/file/d/1zJvUgcsXkwBqf8gGUSUJWUInSLn34WT_/view?usp=sharingAnd here's a soundcloud link if you're lazy. https%3A//soundcloud.com/user-761067382/samar-mg32-test%3Fsi%3Dc8c801bd03d7426bbdb851cb03ca0716%26utm_source%3Dclipboard%26utm_medium%3Dtext%26utm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharing Gassssssss, nice job JK, I think you introduced me to this song a long time ago, one of my all time favs since and just instantly mood transporting to that space, really nice rendition and great guitar sound👍👍

Not only is the acoustic guitar sounding beautiful, but the the way it picks up his voice is wonderful. The off axis response of these from the videos and sound samples I’ve listened to are quite excellent.

Thank you for your interest in our microphones!
Best, M
I haven't even heard these but based on my current Samar ribbons and reputation alone...., I just bought 5 MG33's on sale for location drum recording!!! I hope they take over the drum recording task in all locations, have I completely lost it? lol

View AttachmentView AttachmentSweet looking layout, I have the mg20 and love it. I'll bet these are going to be pristine and have a super clean transformerless sound. Love to hear a sample if you ever get a chance. By the way, my thumbs up is for the four that you received, not to the one you didn't

Well that sounds fantastic. Great example across the spectrum of opportunity with that mic. That very beginning section, and the section beginning around 2:10 really emphasize what you're describing about natural. If that's boring, I love boring! :-) I get what you're saying though, I've got so many tube and transformer-based things that sometimes I get a little bit overwhelmed by the color. I definitely need a super clean true to life mic like this. I gotta pick up a couple of those MG32s. I missed that good deal at front end, but they go on sale I think a couple times a year.

Just for context, here’s a recording of the same guitar with my BeesNeez Elly Fet. The Samars are used as a spaced pair a few feet back, but the BeesNeez is mostly what you hear here. www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/r7kkq8knkb0bgzp29oz8g/Samar-Bees.wav?rlkey=gd2da7b7q8wtccd87cmhuj7ef&st=m6yqccl8&dl=0And here’s a Beyer 201 on the same guitar. www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/67ics1txiptantp5qyygz/Beyer201-Yamaha.wav?rlkey=me0zs096r1pa8h1fu69b7yt0t&st=nmascbhe&dl=0I think both those should give you a good idea of how the Samar hears things relative to some other great mics.

Indeed, that was very helpful! Very different mics for sure. I have to say that at least today I'm most enamored with the Samar clean mic. I get what you're saying about boring, it sounds a bit muted but as soon as you lean into the guitar it really opens up and captures everything the guitar has to offer. The BN FET is really bold and brash especially in those upper mids But on that example for my taste it was a bit jangly. The Beyer is certainly lovely as well; smooth and elevated highs. In this particular case though after listening to the MG32, the Beyer sounded just a tad thin next to the full response of the MG32. Thanks! Decision has been made. :-)

To be clear, this is my purchasing experience, I think samar and marks mics are top of the heap as good as it gets, I went with these off my personal experience with his ribbons and samars rep. It doesn’t change that I got them today a month after I ordered them and I’m still light 1 mic, I missed a session sat and sun and spent $1,800.00, no one would be happy with that and we all should share varying degrees of positive and negative experiences as it protects us as consumers and keeps merchants on the straight and narrow, there is nothing malicious about that, I’m sure these mics will be go to’s eventually, they are really too cute to ignore 👐🏻
